Onto a winner
Attention to both practical and aesthetic detailing contributed to a double win in the NKBA awards for designers Ingrid Geldof and John Gaynor
Designing a bathroom to complementthe architectural style of a house can result in an innovative design solution. Such was the case with the award-winning bathroom featured on these pages.
Designers of the bathroom, Ingrid Geldof and John Gaynor of Ingrid Geldof Design, won the Best Bathroom award in this year's National Kitchen & Bathroom Association (NKBA) awards.
In announcing the award, the judges said the spacious layout not only balances the height of the vaulted ceiling, but also creates a simple, yet luxurious retreat.
Key features include a freestanding Kaldewai bath tub, which makes a strong design statement in the centre of the room, and a solid, semi-freestanding tiled wall. This wall conceals the shower and also enables the wall-hung bidet and toilet to be tucked out of sight of the entrance. The use of small wall tiles and a white-on-white colour palette enhance the spacious look of the room.
The Confalonieri vanity cabinetry, which features twin vessel basins, is wrapped with Stone Italia Cristal surfacing from Absola. Negative detailing adds to the fresh, contemporary look.
Ingrid Geldof and John Gaynor also won the NKBA's Best Laundry award for a laundry in the same house. The owner wanted a light-filled space that would also fit seamlessly with the overall architecture of the house.
As well as providing a sophisticated hot-water system and lots of storage, the room needed to link to the outdoors so the owners could clean up after gardening.
The laundry has a galley-style layout, with lacquered white cabinetry and ample bench space provided by granite surfaces. A butler's sink and traditional pewter tapware also feature.
