While this oatmeal factory design by JSPA houses the necessary production facilities, it also ensures the public spaces are filled with ever-changing patterns of shadow and light


Designed by JSPA Design, this factory in Shanxi province, China transforms raw oats into flour products. The mostly automated production process needed two different production lines with high volume machinery, but there are also spaces open to the public with a shop, a café, and office space.

A system of brick walls encloses and hides the various technical spaces of the factory while a simple concrete volume on top of hosts the public spaces of the program

Besides satisfying all functional requirements, the building generates surprising experiences for visitors, with textural patterns and an everchaging interplay of light and shadow.
