The project combined the use of high-tech LVL structures with decorative, acoustic and fire-resistant wood panelling. Wall and ceiling linings specialists Decortech supplied all the perforated and non-perforated Tasmanian blackwood and non-perforated Tasmanian oak panels that line the display hall's interiors.Decortech created custom panelling for MOTAT following the design brief from Studio Pacific Architects. Full-scale samples were created for the architects at the outset so any changes could be made before construction.The combination of perforated panels and non-perforated panels on the gallery wall creates a standout feature that manages the aviation hall's acoustic, fireproofing and airflow needs. The acoustic timber panelling seen here in this MOTAT Aviation Display Hall was done by Decortech Ltd. Products included Decortech Firesafe MDF SFI 0 and SDI 5 finished with Tasmanian oak veneer in a clear satin finish and Tasmanian blackwood veneer, with perforations, in a clear finish.Over 900 panels were installed on the gallery wall and 400 on the other walls. The Decortech team predrilled all panels with countersunk screw holes to make installation easier.Decortech created over 300 precision shop drawings from the site measurements provided before manufacturing even commenced ensuring everything fitted snugly.
