Construction materials have been in the spotlight in recent years not always for the right reasons. But the publicity surrounding leaky buildings has caused every homeowner, designer and builder to look carefully at all the options.

For Brent Mitchell, managing director of Jennian Homes Auckland East, it's not a difficult choice he specifies Palliside cladding for many of his new homes, including the Beachlands house shown above.

"I know that long term, the owners are going to be very thankful," Mitchell says. "They have already expressed their appreciation following a recent storm with high winds the house was very stable and watertight. The low maintenance and the fact that the house never needs painting are also real benefits."

The house, which recently won a Silver Award in the Master Builder House of the Year Awards, features a mix of materials. Palliside weatherboards, installed both vertically and horizontally, are paired with plastered brick. The cladding, in the colour Tea, is complemented by dark-brown doors, fascias and guttering.
