Living space
Custom cabinetry, with integrated appliances from Smeg, extends along one wall of this apartment
Most of us are familiar with open-plan kitchens that form an integral part of the living and dining area. It's a style that seems to suit our relaxed style of cooking and entertaining.
Designer Michael Marsham has taken this approach a step further in this kitchen, one of a complex of five compact apartments, by incorporating the kitchen cabinetry into the main living area.
Marsham designed a long, floating cabinet and benchtop that extends along one wall of the apartment. At one end, the cabinetry provides display and storage space within the living area.
At the other end delineated by button tiles on the wall the cabinetry serves as a kitchen benchtop and storage area. A sink, positioned to provide garden views, and integrated Smeg appliances complete the understated look.
"We selected these appliances because they enhance the slick, contemporary feel of the interior, and integrate into the minimalist cabinetry," says Marsham.
Functionality and affordability were also considerations. The five apartments are fitted with a combination of Smeg appliances, including the 420X multifunction oven, SA605X 60cm Ceran cooktop and the SA480T60 slide-out rangehood.
Cabinetry doors are finished with a Laminex timber veneer. Their dimensions complement those of the oven, to enhance the integrated look. A white Corian benchtop provides a smooth surface that is continued in the ceramic cooktop.
