Living la dolce vita
Dark oak island makes a bold centrepiece
In years gone by, a large, wooden table would have been the centrepiece of an Italian or Spanish kitchen. That traditional, handcrafted furniture look has been recaptured in this kitchen, with a custom-built, dark-stained oak island.
Manufactured by Marton Lee Design, both the island and the hand-painted perimeter cabinets present the aged patina of a kitchen that could have evolved over time.
Managing director John McRae says creating the aged look for the island was a particular challenge for this project.
"Oak timber was chosen for its graining and deep textural look, which helps provide the required patina," he says. "Other traditional features of the kitchen include a custom hood, reminiscent of a hearth, white granite benchtops, and a marble mosaic-tiled splashback."
McRae says Marton Lee Design caters to the upper end of the market all the company's kitchens are handcrafted to custom designs.
The company also manufactures other joinery, and built the bathroom vanities for this house.
