While the range of planters on the market today has undoubtedly expanded, the heavyweight concrete variety that predominates is often unsuitable for many homes, and too uniform for many landscape designs.

There is, however, another option. Inspired by a demand from clients, architects and landscape designers, Bentleigh By Design was established to design and manufacture a wide variety of handcrafted planters, says Ben Schurmann, one of the company's owners.

"By blending solid plaster technology and lightweight polystyrene we can create light, waterproof planters in a range of textured and smooth finishes," he says.

"Polystyrene is an inherently stable and flexible product. Using it enables us to manufacture not only geometrically shaped cubes, chests and towers, but also a range of gently twisting forms."

The robust and durable planters are made in New Zealand, mostly from recycled polystyrene left over from building projects. The finished planters are suitable for a diverse range of indoor and outdoor environments. Choose from the significant range of standard sizes, shapes and textures, or have your own designs custom made.
