Sustainability determines many of the product choices made by specifiers these days. Such decisions may be at a client's request, but they are also likely to reflect the design team's own philosophy.

Warren and Mahoney senior interior designer Kelly McCardle says the creation of enduring and sustainable environments for clients is a crucial aspect of the firm's business.

"To us, sustainability means a design is sustainable structurally, aesthetically and environmentally. Naturally, the materials we choose play an important part in achieving this."

McCardle says the recently completed Wellington premises for Meridian Energy reflect this approach.

"The brief emphasised environmental responsibility, but it also called for the best use of natural light and views, flexible workspaces, and a modern, yet homely, feel for kitchens and utility areas.

"When it came to choosing the decorative surfaces, everything pointed to The Laminex Group's Greenfirst range," McCardle says. "As well as being independently certified through Environmental Choice New Zealand, the Greenfirst range provided the range of colours and textures we needed to satisfy both the brief and our own ideas of what we wanted to achieve."

The office cabinetry features Laminex Stringy Bark in the Natural finish, and Laminex Sarsen Grey. Kitchen cabinetry is in Laminex Licorice Linea in a Natural finish. The walls in the staff cafe feature Laminex Pewter.

Lianne Thomas of The Laminex Group says the Greenfirst range of laminates reflects the company's commitment to environmentally sustainable design.

"These products give our specifiers, including architects, designers and furniture manufacturers, the ability to respond to the demands of their customers without having to compromise any creative design flexibility."

Thomas says in addition to the environmental advantages, specifiers benefit from products that contribute towards Green Star rating tool credits from the New Zealand Green Building Council.
