Take one large, empty space and create an exceptional entertainer's kitchen that has the X factor in abundance. That was the brief for this kitchen in a custom-built home in the grand French chateau style.

Designer Royston Wilson says the owner purchased the house part way through the build, so the project brought similar challenges to a renovation.

"The design needed to accommodate a large structural column on one side of the room," he says. "The kitchen also had to be suitable for caterers and to incorporate numerous cooking appliances and several high-end refrigerators and freezers."

Wilson's solution included a honey onyx island bar, anchored at one end to the structural column. Backlighting brings a touch of glamour to the whole room.

The bar creates a buffer zone between guests and the working area of the kitchen, which features a large island with a much more robust form. This island has a Victorian ash upstand that is curved on the inside edge.

"The timber block curves around the cooking area, providing extra space and establishing an entertainment platform," says Wilson. "The timber was sandblasted to add character the process highlights the graining. We also introduced an oblique angle to one end of the island, which provides visual drama and takes out some of the physical volume, making the island seem a little lighter."

Cabinetry on the rear wall has a random pattern routed into the MDF for added interest. This wall houses the ovens, a coffee machine, wine refrigerator and luxury refrigerator there is also a separate cool room with a freezer and a scullery. Four cooktops are provided, making it even easier for the home cook or caterer to create restaurant-quality meals.

Custom shelving features on one side of the structural column, and on the rear wall. Colourful stained wood panels interspersed with black create eye-catching Mondrian-style display cabinets.
