Iconic architect-designed home gets an appropriate lush kitchen
Context is key in any kitchen design. This engaging, material rich kitchen more than rises to the occasion.
Designed by John Mills, John Mills Architects
From the architect:
We completed an extensive refurbishment and additions to this iconic Athfield Architects home a few years ago.
The kitchen and bathroom were left until recently in their original and unlovely state of mild distress.
The owners are enthusiastic cooks and have a large collection of excellent equipment, recipe books and exotic ingredients – so the new kitchen was to be an important focus in the home.

The kitchen space available was long and narrow. Their brief called for practicality and luxury, including a place to engage with guests as the cooking magic was happening – over a glass or two of Syrah perhaps!
A slab of exquisite hand-picked granite forms both a wonderful working surface and a colourful place to catch up or share great wine and food.

The mix of dark walnut joinery, natural plaster and hand-made tiles celebrates a lush and engaging aesthetic in contrast to the current minimal fashion.
All the dark and natural interior surfaces provide an evocative visual frame for our kitchen
Careful detailing with hand-finished joinery woodwork is complemented by brass negative details.
Lighting design was an essential part of our design, as most entertaining is in the evening.
