Glass fiber-reinforced concrete has many benefits
To enhance the bold, contemporary lines of the house, the designers specified several custom pre-cast architectural elements. The fireplace surround and exterior walls feature pre-cast glass fiber-reinforced concrete (GFRC) from Roma Design.
Company director Mario Aloe says that while this project also uses custom-designed and manufactured GFRC panels, the majority of Roma Design's work involves single GFRC cast pieces.
"With all our pre-cast projects, the color is an integral part of the product. This ensures the walls will continue to look good for years to come, and will never need painting," he says. "In addition, there are many other benefits for architects and homeowners. The GFRC pre-cast system provides the look and feel of natural stone, but as it is lightweight, it is a less expensive option. Installation is also less costly."
Aloe says GFRC can be used on the second or third story of a house, where the weight of natural stone may be prohibitive.
