There is usually more than one way to achieve a particular architectural look sometimes the most cost-effective option can provide additional benefits.

Such was the case for this Tauranga show home built by Rutherford Homes. The company wanted to re-create the weathered, country look of traditional South Island stone farmhouses, but wanted a lightweight, cost-effective alternative to schist.

A Stutex Stone cladding that replicates the tones and texture of Central Otago schist was specified. The cladding is a blend of ES60 and LS60 from the Cerastone range. ES60 is a chunky edgestone that provides visual weight and solidity, while the LS60 is a finer ledgestone with a horizontal cut. This gives the exterior walls a neat, linear profile while not detracting from the rustic look.

Both stone types are predominantly dark grey with a hint of rust, which brings out the natural tones of the dark wood accents on the house. It also complements the neutral-coloured plasterwork.

Stutex Stone director Lorraine Goudie says the company supplies more than 20 different stone textured profiles from two ranges Cerastone and Cultured Stone many of which can be blended, providing an even greater choice of looks.

"All these cladding types are about one third the weight of natural stone, which allows for considerable design flexibility. For example, the stone can be used on second storeys, where weight is an issue. Chimneys, pillars, entrance areas and gable ends are particularly well suited to the use of stone, which will add value and provide visual impact without a huge cost outlay."
