High achiever

The increasing popularity of holiday homes that provide an income, creates a number of building challenges. An adaptable layout is required to cater to the needs of the homeowners and their fee-paying guests, and construction must be robust and durable to withstand the constant turnover of people.

According to judges of the Registered Master Builders House of the Year, Tomlinson Construction got it right with this guest lodge. It won a Gold Reserve award, as well as the Mico Bathroom award and the Heart of the Kitchen award.

Set in a vineyard amidst rolling hills, the single-storey house covers 400m². Most rooms have access to one of four terraces and courtyards, and all bedrooms have their own ensuite.

"The outstanding appeal of this home is its expansive ambience," says Tomlinson Construction manager Ron Braddick.

"The ceiling heights range up to 3.6m and are matched by over-height doorways. This contributes to an open living area, with clear sight lines."

Interior finishes include rimu detailing, neutral carpets and floor tiles that enhance a natural colour scheme. On the exterior, cedar feature walls and a cedar pergola complement the textured plaster applied to the brick facade.

As many of these internal and external finishes required specialist tradespeople, Tomlinson Construction provided a full project management service.
