Heritage revealed
Removing peeling layers and colour matching brick exteriors can restore heritage buildings to their original charm
When this School of Arts wanted to rejuvenate its premises, it sought a low-maintenance solution that would restore the building's original facade.
Nawkaw Australia owner Anthony Watling says Nawkaw was commissioned to oversee the full exterior restoration of the heritage-listed, late-Victorian building.
"To do this, we literally had to pull back the layers of peeling paint and mortar to find the original brickwork."
He says that when the peeling paint was removed, it revealed older unsightly attempts at restoring the 1895 building.
"This included decaying mortar from rising damp and some shoddy efforts at repointing and repairing.
"The Nawkaw team pulled out the old mortar and replaced it, and where necessary colour matched the brickwork back to the original colour. We also struck a tuckpointed finish to the joints."
Nawkaw worked with the local council heritage officer to ensure the surface matched the original heritage colours.
Watling says the Nawkaw colour system is well suited to restoration of building exteriors as it cleans and matches the exterior to its original beauty, rather than adding another layer. Guaranteed to last, the system requires no future maintenance, nor will it weather or peel.
