The majority of apartments on the seaward side of Saunders Wharf have a louvred awning, which provides privacy and filters out the sunlight.

Architectural Glass Projects (AGP) were selected to design and construct these motorised aluminium awnings. When vertical, they act as a louvred screen wall, protecting the balcony from wind and sun. When raised, they open the balcony to the view and become a horizontal awning.

The louvre blades can be adjusted to suit individual preference tenants can let in as much or as little of the outdoors as they like. When completely closed, the louvres make the balcony more useable on rainy days.

AGP's Slimline Shutters were used on the other exterior windows and balconies. These slide sideways rather than lift. The company also created the glass balustrades and stainless steel handrails, glass skylight roofs and operable sun control louvres over the glass roofs.

Project manager Bob Nall says the company's products have a range of special features which make them well suited to this project.

"Our products are resistant to corrosion, which suits this harsh marine environment. The aluminium was anodised to 25 micron thickness. Stainless steel was electro-polished or painted to prevent tea staining," he says.
