As families grow, the home that suited everyone only a few years ago may suddenly need some imaginative remodeling.

For this project, the homeowners had only a tiny children's bathroom that was difficult to maneuver in. Designer Jackie Thelen converted a nursery into a larger family bathroom with plenty of space.

"To make the bathroom child-friendly, I included stools so that the younger children could reach the pedestal sinks, and used a lot of porcelain material, so there are no worries about maintenance," she says.

The new design allows two children to use the pedestal sinks at the same time, while a pocket door closes off the part of the room that contains the tub and toilet.

"We also changed a small window in the tub wall to a larger glass block window, with maximum privacy glass. To center the tub on the glass block window, we added a full-length six-inch-deep shelf which added room for toys and toiletries."

Hardwood floors in the sink area were triple-varnished for water resistance, and Venatino marble in the wet area was honed to create a non-slip surface. Both provide a visual contrast to the warm blue of the paintwork above the white beadboards.
