Ground breaker
The Department of Conservation's new headquarters are designed to be one of New Zealand's leading environmentally friendly buildings. Carpet from Cavalier Bremworth is part of this initiative
With an ever-increasing worldwide concern for environmental issues, more companies are looking closely at their manufacturing and production methods.
Carpet manufacturer Cavalier Bremworth is one such company that's committed to providing viable flooring product alternatives that minimise the impact on the environment. It has recently been awarded a licence to produce carpets under the Environmental Choice New Zealand label.
For the Department of Conservation's new Wellington headquarters, Architecture+ specified Cavalier Bremworth carpet. Its pure New Zealand wool product, Aerolite, in the colour Kaaba, was chosen for use in work areas.
Aerolite was selected to provide both thermal and acoustic benefits in a building without traditional air conditioning. Wool carpets absorb moisture when the atmosphere is damp and release it when it is dry, thus helping to balance the relative humidity of the interior spaces.
Wool carpet also absorbs chemical pollutants from the atmosphere and neutralises them, and acts as an insulator, keeping the interior warm in winter and cool in the summer. In addition, it absorbs noise and reduces echoes, thus creating a more pleasant work environment.
