Garden of dreams
This Hawke's Bay garden is inspired by the Spanish style 1950s home it accompanies and offers a restful retreat for the busy homeowners
Landscape designer – Charlotte Pedersen, Espaso Verde
From the designer:
Espaso Verde was engaged to design this Mediterranean inspired landscape to provide an escape from the business of life for its owners.
Following on from the design, Espaso Verde installed and now maintains this garden in Hawke's Bay.
Located on the outskirts of Hastings it looks out across the city to the Havelock Hills and Te Mata Peak.

The house was built in the 1050s and has a Spanish influence, so this provided the inspiration for the landscaping, combined with the large established trees which provided good bones.
Developing a sense of entry to the house via the walled courtyard provides an area for entertaining and relaxing with the gentle sound of water in the background.
A small kitchen garden is located next to the dining courtyard with the beds made form concrete cylinders.
Recycling of materials including bluestone tiles and old red brick are combined with gravel and large raw cut bluestone to offer a sense of time and age to the landscape.
They combine to connect to the architecture and form the outdoor spaces.
Pathways meander through lush perennial planting, the inclusion of an secluded shade courtyard to escape the summer sun, an intimate space for fire, a Petanque piste, large formal lawn and relaxed outdoor entertaining area offer a space for all occasions.
We have combined structure with a sense of softness to achieve a garden that has a sense of place and a style that belongs. The intent was to create a series of spaces that connect around the site creating a feeling of the garden being larger than it actually is with planting that offers seasonal change throughout the year.
