Penthouse design combines all the best features of home and apartment – including seamless outdoor living

Project: Silkwood by Silkari

Interior architecture and design: Cameron Woo Design

From the designer:

When asked to design this space, I envisaged creating a verdant sanctuary perched at the top bathed with natural light and cooled by ocean winds with panoramic views looking towards the endless horizon lines of the city and ocean.

With our mild climate, the ability to open the interior onto the generous balcony to enjoy seamless alfresco living is quintessentially Sydney to me: breakfast on the balcony in the morning to greet the day, relaxing in the warm embrace of sunshine whilst reading a book during the day, and soaking in the outdoor hot tub in the cool early evening.

he fragrance of the garden perfuming the interior also appealed to me. I dreamt of the spaces, materials and finishes to be ethereal and to invoke a sense of serenity in this oasis of calm.

From a functional point of view, I really desired the layers of spaces and the spaciousness of a house. The layout of the penthouse cleverly separates the private spaces of bedrooms from the entertainment areas.

Like a house, I created an arrival point with a proper entry foyer with ample storage; and, for entertaining, a generous dining space with an equally generous gourmet kitchen together with a great room - that is really a very spacious double living room - that opens onto an enormous lushly landscaped balcony that affords sweeping views of Sydney.

All bedrooms open onto the verdant balcony with the considered landscaping offering pockets of privacy from each bedroom to enjoy.

The master bedroom is really a separate haven with it’s own dressing room and outdoor hot tub, whilst the master bathroom also enjoys spectacular views from both the shower and bath.

A junior master bedroom is discreetly located to preserve its privacy.

Ultimately, comfort and indulgence in a home are what’s most important to me, and this is what we’ve created.
