To make the lighting plans a reality at Green Square, Q Electrical Services worked alongside James Design in specifying and installing the products used. The company also designed and installed communication services, security services, emergency power supply and a generator.

Q Electrical worked closely with lighting manufacturers to select the most energy-efficient light fitting available to meet the necessary requirements for a Green Star rating, says managing director Greg Hutley.

"The fitting we selected was a Pierlite Futcha Semi-Specular one 28W fluorescent light fitting, which achieved the required target of two watts per square metre, per 100 lux, as set out by the Green Star standards," he says.

Instead of the traditionally used 36W T8 lamps, 28W T5 lamps were specified. This reduces the energy used per fitting by almost a half, compared to a conventional lighting design.

As well as being able to switch bank zones every 100m², lift lobbies and rest rooms are installed with sensor-control lighting, which only turns on when someone is present.

In place of traditional iron-core ballasts, Green Square uses electronic ballasts that produce less heat, thus reducing the load on the air conditioning plant.
