From scratch
Designer Dee Dee Ackerman loved everything about this newly built home except the interior fit-out. So she pulled it all out and started over
Restaurants where you can cook your own food at your table are popular in many cultures. In the home environment, this kind of cooking is a good way to get the cook out of the kitchen and spending more time with guests.
Ackerman chose a Cook-N-Dine table for her home because she loved the concept of having guests over for cook-your-own dinner parties.
"It's so much fun, and it's a real icebreaker at dinner parties," she says.
She had an extra-large table custom made to the correct height so it could be built in to the kitchen island.
The electrically powered table is made from one piece of 304-stainless steel sheet metal, the centre sinking down when hot so all cooking juices remain in the centre. You don't need to use oil, but can add water, wine or stock. While the centre heats up quickly to 430°F, the dining area toward the edge of the table remains completely cold.
Low maintenance, the table can be cleaned with water while the surface is still hot.
