Even the most adroit, involved renovation needs finishing touches to make it shine the right choice of paint can add to and accentuate its character.

This project, by Lorna Wallace Design, started with two double-storey 1936 apartments that had previously had only one owner for 70 years. Wallace says the renovation saw both two-bedroom apartments merged by removing a central wall the result being a generous, four-bedroom family home.

"The second staircase was removed to create a void of light down through the home, and skylights were added where needed," says Wallace. "Elements such as C-bus controls, a self-cleaning pool, underground water tank, a modern kitchen and butlers pantry all brought the residence into this century."

In addition, a cellar, three bathrooms and two powder rooms, one for the pool, were also added.

"All the woodwork was original dark Tasmanian oak, so when we came to the renovation there was little light through the rooms the individual units had given the impression of being dark, and cold," says Wallace. "We opened up walls where we needed more light, adding new, same-style windows and glass doors."

The whole house was replastered, as it had been finished in what had become a tired-looking stucco surface. Upon completion, the designer painted the interior rooms in lighter, warm colours.

"On the exterior, the woodwork is in white PPG Gypsum for contrast," says the designer. "The render is in PPG Windmill this was to work with the paving, yet still be smart and current."

In the hallway, PPG Cake Batter is used in half strength, adding light to this space. The woodwork and wainscot are in PPG Gypsum.

This combination is repeated in the family room with woodwork and cabinets in PPG Gypsum, maintaining a uniformity that flows throughout.

"In the family room and kitchen, we wanted the white cabinets to contrast with the grey granite bench tops," says Wallace. "The master bedroom was painted in PPG Grey Beige, as, again, we needed a warm tone for the colder side of the home. This tied in with the carpet and the colour of the silk curtains giving a relaxed feel to this important bedroom. White contrasting ceilings and woodwork are in PPG Gypsum."
