It's often the unexpected touches that create the wow factor in a kitchen perhaps a strong colour accent or a bold contrast in materials.

This new kitchen, which was part of a major house renovation, incorporates both these elements. Manufactured by RH Cabinetmakers, the kitchen features sleek, white-lacquered cabinets that provide a light, bright counterpoint to a natural timber ceiling. A narrow strip of glazing above the cabinets makes the ceiling appear to float, enhancing the contemporary look.

RH Cabinetmakers managing director Rob Hendrickx says the new cabinetry reinforces the kitchen's horizontal lines. Below-counter storage is provided by long drawers, rather than cupboards. These feature the Blum TandemBox self-closing drawer system. An appliance cupboard is concealed behind a long panel that slides up to reveal more bench space.

The kitchen also features a warm red-brown glass splashback, Jura Beige limestone benchtops and natural wood display shelving.
