For all the senses
Perfumed, colorful, edible and tactile this garden caters for the needs of the entire family
People appreciate gardens in different ways. Some enjoy gazing out at their flower beds, while others like to get their hands dirty working in the vegetable patch. For children, the garden is a place to play.
The owners of this home wanted a garden that fulfilled the desires of everyone in the family, says landscape designer Robin Shafer.
"They requested a great many perfumed plants, roses in particular. With a view to the garden acting as a playground, sculptural aspects were also included in the design."
Flowers were chosen for their seasonal color as well as their scent. Daphnes, violets, heliotrope and Brunfelsia grow in terraced flower beds, which were created to accommodate a sloped site.
In order to further utilize available space, bay trees grow against the walls, and star jasmine is trained as a wall cover.
A swing seat adorns the highest terraced area. Screened by a camellia hedge, this space creates an enclosed garden for children.
"Herbs and edible plants, such as runner beans, grow here. Wooden tripods add visual interest to two vegetable patches," says Shafer.
