Branding our national carrier
No matter where you are in the world, when you sight the Air New Zealand koru, there's always a tug at the heart strings and a longing for home and all things familiar. It's an association that has become so strong over the years that Air New Zealand is now promoting the iconic koru as its key branding initiative.
Kyle Pennell, general manager of Lexicon Systems, the company responsible for the manufacture and installation of all the corporate signage for the building, says the koru is the prominent branding on the exterior its size even greater than the Air New Zealand name in letters above the veranda.
Pennell says Lexicon Systems was asked to apply the brand in a fresh way that would be in keeping with its new prominence.
"The koru needed to showcase greenstone, the new corporate colour, as effectively as possible. This is not a plain colour, but a dark, mottled green."
For the exterior signage, the koru was built from fibreglass to provide the luminescence needed at night. It is backed with metal plate. Pennell says the height of the building and the unusual shape of the koru provided a challenge for the installation team, which needed to ensure the signage had structural integrity, and a minimum of visible fixings.
Lexicon Systems also created aluminium signage with acrylic faces for other areas, such as reception. Here the dark-green letters needed to be appropriately spaced and secured on the slats of the timber panelling. Other signage created by Lexicon Systems included external window frosting.
