Ordering a new kitchen is an opportunity to introduce a dramatic, hand-crafted aesthetic into the heart of your home. "This kitchen is a good example a classic Connecticut-style kitchen, complete with beaded inset distressed cabinetry and detailing such as turned posts on the island," she says. "An individualistic air is achieved through elements of French chic and a customized predominant color."

The designer created the custom robin's-egg color for the kitchen, and this is glazed to add to the classic styling. The delicate blue brings a feeling of openness to the space, and provides an appropriate contrast to the family's collection of deep red china.

Another counterpoint to the pale blue cabinetry finishes can be seen in the red Toile de Joie material backing the chicken wire door fronts under the sink. Fronting cabinetry with material and wire is an appropriate traditional French design element.

"Walnut floors, stained chocolate brown, further extend the Connecticut styling and also contrast well with the light walls," says Steinbach-Schecter.
