Finding a new angle

A well-designed home does not mean much if the construction is not carried out to the same level of quality. One way to ensure this is to choose a certified builder.

For this project, Mark Todd of Absolute Build in Kerikeri, a member of the Certified Builders Association of New Zealand, was contracted to complete the construction. Mike Flooks says that both he and the homeowner were pleased with the high level of finish achieved by Absolute Build.

Derek Baxter, CEO of the Certified Builders Association of New Zealand (CBANZ), says that contracting a certified builder gives a homeowner or developer the freedom to relax.

"CBANZ members have undergone rigorous training and testing to become trade qualified. Part of this training includes principles of work ethics, such as acting with honesty, integrity and responsibility, and dealing fairly and equitably with clients and other industry professionals at all times."

For further assurance of quality in a builder's workmanship, a certified builder can offer a 10-year guarantee for labour-only projects, and members are obliged to apply to Builtin New Zealand for a 10-year guarantee on full build projects.

"Where the certified builder is the head contractor, the guarantee covers materials and work completed by the certified builder and the subcontractors engaged by him, subject to the limitations in the guarantee agreement," says Baxter.

If a contract is not completed for any reason, Builtin New Zealand will encourage the builder to remedy the problem and may appoint another certified builder to do so. The written guarantee will cover or greatly contribute to the cost.
