Figure eight
An octagonal-shaped room has allowed the designer of this master bathroom to think outside the square
As soon as forward-thinking architects step outside the norm, new opportunities open up for inventive interior designs.
The octagonal shape of this master bathroom was a dramatic starting point for designer Mary Landgren of Insignia Kitchen & Bath.
"It can be hard to design within an unusual shape, but it is a great opportunity for a distinctive look," she says.
Landgren installed an octagonal tub and spa in the center of the room, below the octagonal soffit. Another distinctive feature is the etched-glass shower wall that separates the tub and a walk-through shower. The delicate illustrations have a Japanese feel, says Landgren.
The fine decorative element has been developed with stone tile mosaics on the tub deck, shower room walls and main flooring area around the bath. Custom-height mirror frames were built around the sink areas to accommodate the high ceiling, and space for a television was incorporated into the custom-made cabinetry.
"All the elements in the room have been selected to create a warm, inviting feel," she says. "I selected the colors to enhance the rich tones of the limestone floor and the wall tile in the shower."
