They say you shouldn't bring your work home but for the owner of this house, a career in developing top-end properties has provided plenty of inspiration for the design of her own house.

Bringing these ideas to fruition in the kitchen, bathroom and wine cellar was the work of designer Paul Knobel, CKD, CBD. Knobel says that the kitchen was a smaller space than the client was accustomed to working with in her business, North Shore Custom Builders.

"Even so, it was requested that we capture the feeling of high-end functionality and attention to detail that she creates in her own work."

One specific request was for a curved barrel ceiling over the passage from the kitchen to the dining room. As well as being a decorative feature, this area provides extra space for a refrigerator and freezer.

Knobel says that despite the narrow space, the client also wanted to accommodate a large island. To allow for this, the designer recessed the commercial range into the wall.

"This way we could provide space for both the passageway and the island, as well as leaving room for seating."

Knobel designed the range hood to resemble a mantel, with decorative moldings and shelving. The mantel legs and turnings below feature storage for spices, cooking oils, and trays.
