Design inspiration can come from many sources, but sometimes the best ideas are those that have been around for centuries. This new 420m² Greenhithe house, designed by Barry Northcott of Dimension Design and built by Town & Country Residential, provides a contemporary take on the traditional European villa.Northcott says the owners wanted a solid, classically styled house with a European look. A pool courtyard that could be accessed from both the living areas and a guest suite was also in the brief."The house was designed so that it wraps around the courtyard on three sides, helping to enclose the outdoor living area," says Northcott. "This provides privacy and maximises the sun." A view of a home designed by Town & Country Residential. An Italian-style loggia with an operable louvre roof ensures the living space extends beyond the interior."The house was designed with large, open spaces that are ideal for entertaining," says Northcott. "But there are also private spaces where the owners can retreat."Warren Pointon of Town & Country Residential says the use of insulated Firth Hotblocs and concrete flooring enhances the sense of permanence and solidity that characterises the house. Other European influences can be seen in the large portico at the entrance, the subtle detailing on the exterior, and the traditional profile of architraves and mouldings.
