Entertainers' delight

Even when you're lucky enough to find the perfect country retreat, it's highly likely you will want to make some alterations to the kitchen especially if it's an older home.

That was the situation facing the owners of the home featured on these pages, who called in the design team from The Kitchen Place. Designer Dave Martin says the existing kitchen was isolated from the living areas, uninviting and not suitable for entertaining large groups.

"The owners wanted a spacious, open-plan area, suitable for entertaining weekend guests," he says. "They also wanted to maximise a great view of the surrounding countryside."

The solution was to remove the walls on either side of the kitchen, creating one large space with a living area on two sides. A galley layout was designed, with the sink, cooktop and work surfaces on a long island. This ensures the owners can enjoy the view while they prepare meals or socialise with guests.

Martin says the owners also wanted a sophisticated country feel for the kitchen, rather than a themed look.

Nyotha timber cabinetry, Cashmere White granite benchtops and top-of-the-line stainless steel appliances help achieve this aim. A large bank of cabinetry on the rear wall provides plenty of storage for supplies essential for a country house.

To avoid a top-heavy look, Martin incorporated shelving for wine, and large, glass-fronted display cabinets. Further detailing in the kitchen includes a stepped-down benchtop around the sink, dovetail drawers with finger pulls and pull-out chrome pot racks.
