Enlightened perspective
The new Meridian building on Wellington's waterfront cuts a distinctive line in terms of its architecture and its sustainability lighting systems from Enlightenz enhance both
From here on in, contemporary architecture will always be respectful of our resource-beleaguered planet. The new Meridian building on Wellington's waterfront takes this sensibility to the nth degree winning a five-star rating from the New Zealand Green Building Council. This is the highest rating achieved for a new build since the council's inception.
Addressing sustainability can take many forms, says Kelly McCardle, senior designer with Warren and Mahoney, interior designer for the client fit-out.
"On the Meridian building everything from its thermally stable concrete structure to a centralised stairwell that encourages staff and visitors to summon leg power instead of elevators saves on precious energy," says McCardle. "Many of these factors were driven by the principal tenant, Meridian Energy. And everything from sensor-activated tapware to the sophisticated lighting systems played a part."
Enlightenz supplied all the lighting for the forward-looking building. Efficient luminaires and an integrated control system enabled energy savings on several fronts, says managing director Trevor Murray.
"Energy-efficient Trilux fittings, together with a sophisticated Helvar control system, were introduced throughout the building," says Murray.
Helvar Multi-sensors were used in conjunction with the control system, adjusting luminaire usage according to movement and fluctuating light levels. The system links all luminaires to the Building Management System and even allows for offsite maintenance a saving of human, and even transportation, energies. Helvar componentry also allows the use of IP Phones for dimming and luminaire selection, another potential energy saving.
"The Helvar sensors have a 4.5m radius viewing range, registering any movement within this area," he says Murray. "Significant power savings, over 50% in some cases, are achievable through only using the luminaires when people are present and when insufficient natural light is registered."
"Enlightenz's integrated lighting systems contributed significantly to the achievement of 5 stars on the Green Building Rating system," says Murray.
Helvar-built control systems have been used on multiple Wellington buildings, including the Department of Conservation's office fit-out, another eco-friendly project.
