Standing at the water's edge, the Meridian building is exposed to the glare of the harbour as well as its scenic views. To counter any adverse effects, and to provide comfort and office functionality, window shades and blockout blinds were specified.

NZ Window Shades supplied and installed these light-control solutions, which were installed in the meeting and boardroom areas on all floors of the fit-out, says commercial manager Kim Jarman.

"This was to achieve privacy where required, or so that Meridian had precise lighting control for presentations involving projectors," says Jarman. "In addition, the window shades increase the comfort of Meridian's office spaces, in terms of both limiting glare and solar gain. Keeping the offices cooler in warmer months has the knock-on advantage of easing demands placed on the air conditioning plant, which is an attendant contribution to Meridian's energy savings."

The custom blinds were created using Extraflocke fabric in white, with chrome chain controls for the manual blinds and anodised silver bottom rails. Extraflocke fabrics are woven with a flocked backing and made from an enduring, 100% polyester fabric. The material is colour fast, tear resistant and fire retardant.

Jarman says motorisation was chosen for the boardroom roller blinds, using Somfy motors and Group Controllers. The controllers are linked to the BMS, allowing operation of the blinds via an IP phone system.
