Edwardian character
Despite appearances to the contrary, this hand-built, solid wood kitchen with traditional styling and craftsmanship is in a brand new house
Design guru Terence Conran says that as a young child it was not the grand reception rooms of stately homes that most impressed him, but rather the functional, well-scrubbed kitchens below stairs.
That sense of nostalgia continues to define traditional kitchen design today, as this project illustrates.
The kitchen, which was designed by Mario Giudice of Kitchen Dimensions, features the craftsmanship and detailing that characterize many period homes. Giudice says in this case, it was a traditional Edwardian look that was required.
"The house exterior is clad in recycled bricks that give it a distinct Edwardian feel. The owners, Justin and Rebecca Cannon, wanted to continue this look in the kitchen."

Traditionally styled solid wood cabinets and fully integrated appliances were central to this theme.
"The corbels, panel doors and moldings were inspired by old English kitchens," says Giudice, "as were the chimney and mantelpiece."
The large butler's sink, plate rack, spice drawers and white-tiled backsplash are other features typical of the era. The tiles in the chimney recess are placed on the diagonal to add visual interest. Downlights within the chimney and beneath the overhead cabinets also enliven the kitchen and provide essential task lighting.
Countertops in Cashmere Gold granite were specified. These have a lamb's tongue edge that enhances the solid look of the perimeter cabinets and the large island.
A jarrah hardwood parquet floor in a herringbone pattern with a contrasting border further defines the cabinetry. The flooring also adds a degree of formality that is in keeping with the Edwardian look.
Giudice says the kitchen incorporates plenty of counter space, making it well suited to entertaining. It was designed so the owners could socialize with guests while preparing meals the work triangle is contained within the boundary of the island.
Functionality was also a key concern in respect to the design of the cabinetry. The drawers and cupboards feature the latest technology, ensuring every item is easy to access and positioned where needed.
