Energy efficiency has become the driver for an increasing number of new home designs in recent years. Similarly, low- maintenance materials are seen as the most eco-friendly and cost-effective option.

Both these factors influenced the design of this new Papatoetoe house, which was designed and constructed by NZ Built.

Managing director Paul Belcher says the owners specifically wanted an environmentally friendly design that would keep energy costs to a minimum. They also wanted a low-maintenance home that would continue to look good for years to come.

"These were key reasons we specified Palliside weatherboard cladding, which never needs painting," Belcher says. "The weatherboards, in the Traditional profile, also provide clean lines and complement the weatherboard exterior of the existing house on the subdivided site."

But despite their traditional origins, the Palliside weatherboards enhance the highly contemporary design of the house. Key features of the split-level design include a long covered entranceway that runs alongside the swimming pool, a cantilevered balcony with skylights, and a cantilevered terrazzo outdoor benchtop. The house also features double glazing, sustainable timbers, energy-efficient lighting and solar-powered hot water.

Belcher says that cost savings were a consideration for the cladding as well.

"Palliside was a cost-effective option," he says. "The building team also appreciated Palliside's speed of installation, which enabled savings on scaffolding."

Palliside is manufactured to withstand New Zealand's climate extremes and coastal conditions. The weatherboards have an interlocking design with hidden nailing, which prevents moisture from getting behind the boards. This helps ensure the cladding won't rot, warp or peel.
