For a project such as this, using an interior finish that was named the Outstanding Green Product of the Year 2004 by the National Association of Home Builders was an easy choice for the specifiers. That finish is American Clay.

"The clay is an environmentally friendly and practical alternative to traditional plasters," say Steve and Priscilla Froelich, owners of Mad Studios. "It gives the cellar and stairway an earthy feel, somewhat like an Old World wine cellar."

Mad Studios applied the clay to the walls and ceiling of the cellar, before adding artistic murals to a cellar wall and the stairway landing.

"Since the artistic accents needed to be complimentary, we created tone-on-tone vignettes. These were painted using materials that were soft and subtle like the clay itself."

American Clay can be used in any room as an alternative to paint or wallpaper. It can be worked into a soft matte finish, or its texture can be varied. Mad Studios specializes in creating distinctive walls finishes, such as hand-dyed wallpaper, and a variety of faux finishing techniques.
