There are many ways to make a house stand out from its neighbours. Architectural features and the innovative use of materials are two elements that can make a home look distinctive.

For the Jalcon Homes showhome, both the design and the materials help achieve a sense of individuality. Kiwi Schist manufactured stone from Stutex Stone features on the large chimney, and on the base of the pillars and the house.

The ES60 profile chosen for this project replicates the size, texture and colouring of natural schist a key reason for its choice, says Jalcon Homes director Tony Anderson.

"Creating the right look was vital," he says. "The Kiwi Schist enhances a sense of permanence and helps to anchor the house visually."

Anderson says the weight of the product, its ease of installation and its cost effectiveness were other factors influencing its choice.

Stutex Stone says the Kiwi Schist weighs considerably less than natural stone, and can be installed quickly and easily over a pre-sealed exterior or interior substrate. As the manufacturing process produces a medium-weight veneer, no extra foundations or framing are required. This also means Stutex Stone products can be used for multi-storey or stone-over-roof applications.

The products are available in a variety of styles and colours, and include a schist that replicates the natural colourings of Central Otago schist. There are also accessories that can be used to create detailing or enhance openings. These include trim stones, corner stones or quoins, cap stones and sills. All the products come with a 30-year warranty.
