In times of economic hardship it is natural to want to batten down the hatches and ride out the storm. However, with a bit of courage and the right design team, a small investment can reap big rewards.

For the featured businesses Quality Kitchens, Cafe Trends and Zurri Hairdressers opting for a make-over has given the premises a new lease of life, says Yellowfox design manager Shelley Brockliss.

"When times are tough and you're wanting to make changes, a makeover rather than a full re-fit can revitalise your business. Even a small project, such as the Quality Kitchens boardroom refresh can be enough to raise spirits and impress clients."

"Existing boardroom furniture was looking tired and the carpet worn not a positive look for a dynamic company. By simply installing a new storage and bar unit in Bestwood Natural Wood veneer in quarter-cut Tasmanian ash and incorporating some Tile Warehouse mirror tiles for pizzazz, the room looks brand new. Contemporary hardware and new carpet complete the simple yet dramatic transformation."

For the proprietor of Cafe Trends, the desire was to bring some freshness back to the decor and to incorporate some visual depth and interest.

"Vision Wallcoverings wallpaper and Resene paint teamed with pendant lighting from Lighting Direct create a refined aesthetic in the seating areas. New cladding and a new countertop directs attention to the service area, while a fringe curtain creates a staff-only' barrier that doesn't hinder sight lines."

Similarly, fresh paint and a wallpaper feature wall have renewed the interior of Zurri, says Brockliss.

"Simple changes are often the most arresting. By making the most of the industrial elements within the salon and juxtaposing them with a softer element, we've achieved a look that is both edgy and polished."
