It has already been established that the exteriors of Te Awa, The Base provide a vibrant welcome to visitors. Equally dynamic are the interiors, which feature, among other decorative effects, stylised depictions of the Waikato River and hinaki eel traps.

"Bespoke cedar ceilings are just one component of our involvement in the Te Awa project," says Alpha Interiors Waikato general manager Graham Snashall. "The scope of our physical work involved construction of both simple and complex interior walls and suspended ceilings for the public spaces and a majority of the shops within the development."

Both ends of the mall and the food court have high-level feature bulkhead walls of western red cedar timber slats that wrap around the soffit to form an undulating ceiling, representative of the ebb and flow of the Waikato River. These traditional-style elements are complemented by acoustic panelling, high-gloss MDF ceilings and complex curved bulkheads.

"This project is a perfect example of the diversity and breadth of work and construction know-how of the Alpha team. Care and attention to detailing was important to complement the natural forms. All of these aspects came together to make this centre unique and to give a sense of pride for Waikato-Tainui iwi and the wider community."

"Operating New Zealand-wide, Alpha Interiors takes pride in providing a quality finished product," says Snashall.
