Few architectural features suggest a classicMediterranean home as effectively as large, ornate stone elements.

The developers of this home wanted a grand, rather than ostentatious, look and including substantial stone elements in the design was an effective way to suggest this, says Cynthia McCombs of Realm of Design.

The home's large features, such as the columns, have the look of quarried limestone, without the weight. The material used is a glass fiber reinforced concrete. It is much lighter than stone, but does not look artificial or lightweight, says McCombs.

"A real stone fireplace surround might weigh 1000lbs or more; in this material, it might only weigh 200lbs. That can make a real difference when you're considering structural issues and load allowances. It also makes installation easier," she says.

In this home, the neutral color of the columns and fireplaces is used to emulate French stone.

"Because we hand make every element, the color characteristics of each piece are slightly different, which adds to the home's authenticity and overall atmosphere," says McCombs.

The same material is also used for deep casing around the pocket doors and the elevator doors.

Outside, the company made the poolside columns and fire bowls, balustrades, window and door moldings, the fountain in front of the house, and the roof line corbels.
