Listening to clients and designing a home that not only meets their brief, but exceeds their expectations, is par for the course for Don Nelson Architecture

Everyone thinking of building a new home has heard stories about projects with cost overruns and designers who like to push their own agendas. But it's easy to avoid such scenarios when you work with a well-established, reputable company.
Don Nelson Architecture is a good example. The company specialises in the design of new homes and remodelling projects, working throughout New Zealand and in Queensland.
The house shown here is typical of the design approach taken by the firm, says director Don Nelson.

"Design innovation is a hallmark of the company's work," he says. "So, too, is a focus on the client's needs and preferences. This approach means our initial concept plans are changed very little."
Nelson says this large country house was designed to take advantage of the rural views and the sun. The family home incorporates a parents' retreat, a children's wing with a central children's lounge area, and self-contained guest quarters.
All rooms on the ground floor have doors opening to a landscaped outdoor pool area. On the top floor, the master bedroom opens to an intimate balcony.

Special features of the open-plan living area include large, square columns that help define the different living spaces, a high ceiling, and polished concrete floors.
