A mix of materials can lift a kitchen design from appearing fairly ordinary to being interesting and completely individual.

Glen Johns of Glen Johns Designs planned and fitted the kitchen in the new home featured on these pages. The owners wanted the kitchen to have a modern look that would work well with the interior design style of the rest of the house.

A white colour scheme met these requirements, so he combined white lacquer cabinetry with a white Corian benchtop and a clear glass splashback. Warmth is added to the predominantly white theme with a beech timber veneer finish for the tall cabinetry. To ensure the kitchen looked crisp and clean, Johns recommended stainless steel appliances from Smeg.

The Smeg 60cm double oven offers a main oven with four functions including grill, fan-forced and fan-only cooking. The auxiliary oven supplements this with a grill, base element cooking and conventional baking. Doors are removable and easy to clean, while triple glazing makes them safe to touch. A Smeg microwave is integrated behind a flip-up door above the oven.

Set into a stainless steel benchtop is Smeg's 75cm flush-mount five-burner gas hob. This includes automatic electronic ignition, cast iron trivets, a wok stand and a flame failure safety feature.

Teamed with the hob is the Smeg Powerpack built-in rangehood. A four-speed fan with an extraction rate of up to 750m³/hour keeps the kitchen free of steam and unpleasant odours.

For convenient storage of fresh and frozen food, the kitchen also includes a Smeg side-by-side 717-litre refrigerator/freezer.

The clean lines of the kitchen are maintained by Smeg's 60cm-wide fully integrated dishwasher.
