Container colour a winner

Athfield Architect's design for Waterfront House wraps colours of shipping containers into a winning workspace in the 2019 Resene Total Colour Awards

Lyttelton Port’s new Waterfront House interior by Athfield Architects is the overall winner of the Nightingale Award at the 2019 Resene Total Colour Awards, celebrating their tenth year.

The winning project team at Athfield Architects Limited explains: “The interior palette references tones of the surrounding Port Hills creating a building which is grounded in nature while being constructed as part of the manufactured port landscape.”

Bespoke meeting pods, uniquely coloured in Resene Kumera and Resene Pickled Bluewood wood stains, act as markers within open-plan work spaces.

External profiled metal cladding and exposed internal structures are painted in a deep earthy red, Resene Fahrenheit, taking the colour and detailing from shipping containers and wrapping them into the interior.

The new headquarters replaces previous Lyttelton Port Company buildings damaged by the Canterbury earthquakes and supports a cultural shift for the organisation with a collegial pace for the whole company.

Nick Nightingale of Resene says the project cleverly delivers on both function and style, using colours from the port environment.

"We congratulate Athfield Architects for their masterful way of using colour in an extraordinary interior design for Lyttelton Port Company which helps bring people together from all sides of the port operation,” says Nightingale.

The Resene Total Colour Master Nightingale Award, named after the Nightingale family who founded and still run Resene today, recognises excellence in colour and paint use in New Zealand and Australia.

Karen Warman Marketing Manager at Resene says that Resene has a long history of colour.

"Today's colour range of thousands of hues is a world away from the handful that was available when Resene started 73 years ago," she says.

"The Resene Total Colour Awards were launched to encourage and celebrate excellent and creative use of colour; to showcase striking colour palettes and combinations and provide fresh inspiration.”
