COASTAL GEM
Sandstone from the region was specified for Jade's exterior fae§ades and pool features
Few developments in Queensland use sandstone as a cladding material not because local architects don't appreciate its aesthetic and functional qualities, but because of its cost, says stonemason George Francis.
"Sandstone cladding is used very often in Sydney and across Australia, but the cost makes it suitable only for high-end domestic projects," he says.
The Jade development was an exception: top-grade sandstone, a material favoured by the developer for many of its projects, was specified for feature cladding and elements of the exterior hard landscaping.
Francis & Sons was commissioned to supply and install sandstone cladding for the main tower, which reached 53 metres. The same grade of sandstone was specified for elements of the development's surrounding structures and landscaped areas. These included submerged stepping stones in the main pool, waterfalls and pool podium features.
"Sandstone gives an absolute feeling of quality and durability," he says. "Psychologically, wrapping the main tower in sandstone creates a very secure feeling."
The sandstone was quarried from the Capricorn Sandstone Quarries in Rockhampton in George Francis's view, one of Australia's top sandstone-producing quarries.
The company's stonemasons were on site for 13 months and installed more than 2700m² of sandstone. The results, he says, are outstanding.
"The Francis & Sons team appreciated working with the Bezzina crew. Bezzina is a developer that understands natural beauty, and spares no expense to achieve excellence."
