Clean bill of health
Keeping to budget is a major part of any project for the Wellington Regional Hospital, Rider Levett Bucknall carried out cost management duties
With a 47,000m² floor area, the Wellington Regional Hospital is one of the largest single commercial projects ever undertaken in Wellington. Creating a modern tertiary hospital of this scale involves a great deal of organisation, especially when it comes to budget management. With extensive global experience in the health sector, Rider Levett Bucknall was an obvious choice for providing quantity surveying and cost management consultancy services for the project.
The Wellington Regional Hospital was a highly complex project in terms of cost management, says Rider Levett Bucknall director Grant Watkins.
"The nature of a hospital is that there is a large number of user groups requiring careful attention to detail. Specialised building services for the Wellington Regional Hospital included non-standard electrical and plumbing systems, air conditioning, and medical gas. The entire project will have had approximately 35 individual building contracts when the final stages are completed in 2011."
Rider Levett Bucknall provided Capital & Coast District Health Board with timely advice on cost escalations during the construction period, which allowed the project to stay within budget despite an overheated market. The company has also been carrying out post-contract administration on the project.
