Clean bill of health
Specialty elevators, supplied by Schindler Lifts, were required for the Wellington Regional Hospital.
In a medical emergency, speed is of the essence. Patients must be moved to the correct floor quickly and safely to ensure the best treatment is provided in good time. Schindler Lifts supplied and installed specialised elevators and escalators in the Wellington Regional Hospital to fulfil this need.
Schindler installed eleven European-designed and manufactured, heavy-duty, custom modular elevators, as well as two escalators in the foyer. A variety of lift car speeds, configurations and sizes was installed, including three 1600kg-capacity passenger lifts and several 1750kg-2500kg designated bed/passenger cars, says Wellington branch manager Rob Hallsmith.
"Many of the units have been engineered to meet the specific requirements of the hospital. One example is the addition of a priority service function that allows authorised personnel to take immediate control of the lift and take it to any floor, including the heli-pad, in case of emergencies."
In these situations, LCD screens and voice annunciation units inside the elevator will deliver a message alerting passengers of the emergency and asking them to alight at the next available opportunity.
The product range used in the hospital allows for 1000kg to 6000kg-capacity elevators to be installed with or without a machine room, to reduce space requirements and costs.
