Few work spaces receive as much use as a kitchen countertop, which is used daily but still needs to look good for many years. It's no wonder that the choice of counter surface is one of the most important decisions in a kitchen project.

Durability and visual distinctiveness are the key factors for customers, says Matt Barry of Kitchen Distributors of America.

"Granite is popular because it's durable, and as a natural stone, it has subtle variations of tone and veining," he says.

Corian and Zodiac countertops, both manufactured by DuPont, have similar qualities, he says. Both are durable, with low-maintenance surfaces that are easy to keep clean. They are available in a wide range of colors and finishes.

"Finishes that emulate the natural textures and patterns of stone are big news at the moment," says Barry.

Designers from Kitchen Distributors of America work with homeowners to establish a style for their kitchen. They then manage the process, sourcing countertops and specifying custom-designed cabinetry from manufacturers such as Fieldstone.

"We encourage customers to take countertop samples home before making a choice. As granite has slight natural color and veining differences, customers view the whole slab before installation."
