Slate and copper are a natural choice for heritage style
A heritage style dictates the use of traditional materials as far as practically possible. This was especially true for the exterior of the home, where a close match to the appearance of the nearby historic house was desired.
With this in mind, the architect specified slate and copper for the roofing, which was supplied and installed by RW Stokes Enterprises. However, an attractive appearance is not the only benefit of these natural materials.
"Slate and copper provide roofs for a lifetime," says company owner Ronald W Stokes. "Properly fitted, they require almost no maintenance."
The natural slate material used on this roof was pre-drilled and fastened with pure copper nails. Copper was used for gutters and downpipes, and for the roofing over the bay windows.
"Copper is a wonderfully malleable product which conforms easily to any shape," says Stokes. "It is light and highly waterproof, and develops an distinctive patina within a few months, which was exactly appropriate for this project."
