As the name suggests, the English Arts and Crafts movement of the late 19th century embraced traditional craftsmanship and quality materials. Originally conceived as an authentic style for the era, and as an antidote to the industrial age of mass production, the movement is just as relevant today.

Architect William (Bill) H Harrison of Harrison Design Associates says the owners of this house requested an Arts and Crafts-style house in the English manor tradition.

"Every element reflects this approach, from the asymmetrical composition to the hand-shaped stone walls and the gabled and hipped slate roof," he says. "All the materials have a lasting appeal this house was designed to last for generations."

The material palette also includes copper gutters and lanterns, and the extensive use of reclaimed teak from demolished buildings in China. Fieldstone similar to the house exterior features on the large fireplace.

Bill Harrison says the attention to quality, substance and proportion that defined the entire Arts and Crafts movement can be applied to all architectural styles.

"While the house featured here reflects a romantic eclecticism, we apply those same principles to all our work, whether it be an Italianate villa, a Moroccan-style house or a very modern architectural design. We don't have a signature style, but we do have a signature approach one that ensures our clients' visions become lasting legacies."
