Bright outlook

A careful selection of materials and abundant use of glass ensures the surrounding view is a seamless extension of this master suite

A temperate climate and pleasant outlook are the sort of natural amenities that make daily life that little bit more pleasant. So why would you want to start the day with anything less? A master suite that would celebrate these assets was important to Tim Rempel and Liz Miranda.

"The guiding principle was to keep this space as light and open as possible", says owner-architect Tim Rempel.

To that end, the design includes clerestory windows around the sides of the bathroom itself, and wide expanses of glazing in the master bedroom. Rempel used solid or opaque materials such as glacier honed marble and frosted glass only when needed for privacy and structural integrity.

The wet area of the bathroom features dual showerheads, and windows or glass on the three enclosed sides. Homeowner Liz Miranda says it feels just like showering outdoors.

A cantilevered vanity further enhances the airy feel of the room. Carrara marble was used for the vanity top, repeating the grey and white colours of the wall tiles, while the cabinet beneath is in the same rift-sawn white oak as the headboard in the master bedroom.
